Bulgaria has a 200-year tradition of rose cultivation, primarily for essential oil production, making it one of the world’s largest rose oil-producing countries today. Located near the Black Sea, Bulgaria offers excellent growing conditions thanks to its dry, sunny climate and well-drained sandy soil.

How does it work?

The variety of rose grown and distilled for dōTERRA Rose essential oil is the Damask rose (Rosa damascena). Rose bushes are usually planted in autumn and are ready for harvest around May or June. Roses prefer sandy, clay-free soil, sunny conditions, moderate moisture and mild winters.

The essential oil is obtained from the petals by steam distillation. The flowers are picked by hand in the early morning and distilled later the same day. It is important to distil the rose petals on the day of harvest to obtain the highest possible oil yield from these delicate, fragile petals.
