Sourcing
Why Brazil?
A smaller quantity of our Lemon essential oil is sourced from southern Brazil. The climate there is similar to southern Italy and is well suited to growing citrus fruits such as lemons.
Why Italy?
In Italy’s warm climate and fertile soils, lemon trees can produce fruit as large as a small ball. Most of the essential oil obtained for doTERRA comes from the island of Sicily.

How does it work?
The essential oil is found in the lemon peel. It takes 75 whole lemons to produce 15 ml of essential oil. Like many other citrus oils, Lemon essential oil is produced from fruit that the fresh-produce industry does not use. Fresh lemons that can no longer be sold on the fresh market because of bruising or other cosmetic imperfections are typically used to make juice and essential oil. Thanks to the juice and the oil they contain, these rejected fruits can immediately be put to two uses. The oil is extracted by “grating” the peel with a special device that, much like a cheese grater, breaks the surface of the fruit’s peel. This grater-like device is submerged in water just deep enough to cover the blades, so as soon as they break the peel, the released oil enters the water. At the end of the process, the fruit emerges as a completely bare, peel-free ball. The oil is then separated from the water using a centrifuge, through which it is processed at least twice. Once the peel and oil have been removed, the juice is pressed from the fruit.

Maintaining long-term partnerships
One of doTERRA’s sourcing principles is to secure multi-year contracts with growers and distillers based on solidarity and respect. This supports partners in Italy and Brazil.
- Long-term supplier relationships help provide regular and predictable payments.
- This allows suppliers to provide reliable income for the growers from whom they buy the fruit.
