Sourcing
Geranium grows beautifully and abundantly in both Madagascar and Kenya, where local smallholder farmers have cultivated these fragrant flowering plants for decades. Geranium does not require large amounts of water, but it also does not tolerate extremely dry conditions. Although creating the ideal growing environment is challenging, Kenya and Madagascar offer the right balance. In Kenya the plant thrives on the slopes of Mount Kenya, while Madagascar's central highlands provide a mild, even climate.
The essential oil is obtained by steam distilling the leaves, stems and flowers of the geranium plant. For the best quality and highest oil yield, the plant material should be distilled as flowering begins or just before it. Once the plant is in full bloom, it may be too late to obtain the maximum amount of oil, or sometimes any oil at all. For this reason, stems and leaves are harvested immediately before flowering. Only part of the plant is removed during harvest and some leaves are left behind to support regrowth. To preserve its beneficial properties, the essential oil should be distilled within a few hours of harvesting.
