Safe Use of Essential Oils

How can I use essential oils safely? (Frankincense, Air-X, Tea Tree, etc.)
Topically
Topical application is a highly effective way to use essential oils.* Because essential oils have a low molecular weight and are lipid-soluble, they can easily penetrate the skin. Once absorbed, they remain in the applied area and can provide their benefits locally.
Although essential oils are readily absorbed, there are several ways to support absorption further. Gentle massage can stimulate blood flow to the area while also helping improve distribution throughout the body. Using a carrier oil can also support absorption, especially on dry or flaky skin, as it helps moisturize the skin and slows the evaporation of the oil.
To reduce the likelihood of skin sensitivity, especially on young or sensitive skin, it is recommended to dilute stronger oils with a carrier oil, such as Fractionated Coconut Oil. This is also advisable when trying an oil for the first time. A commonly recommended dilution ratio is one drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil.
It is generally better to apply several smaller amounts throughout the day rather than one large dose at once. Start with the smallest possible amount (1–2 drops). Topical application may be repeated every 4–6 hours as needed. Since everyone is different, the appropriate amount may vary depending on body size, age and overall health.
Other effective ways to use essential oils topically
- Add a few drops of oil to a warm bath.
- Prepare a warm or cold compress by soaking a towel or cloth in water and adding essential oils, then place it on the desired area.
- Add a few drops of oil to your body lotion or moisturizer, then apply it to your skin.
Sensitive areas to avoid:
- Certain areas of the face, such as the area around the eyes
- Eyes and inner ears
- Scraped, injured or otherwise damaged skin
Internally
Some essential oils have a long history of culinary use and can be used as part of the diet in suitable ways.* When you sprinkle cinnamon on your oatmeal, sip a cup of peppermint tea or add fresh basil leaves to your spaghetti, you are actually consuming the volatile aromatic compounds naturally found in essential oils.
Many of the flavour and aromatic characteristics of foods are linked to essential oils. In concentrated form, certain suitable essential oils can also be used as dietary supplements. Internal use can be a safe and effective method of application thanks to the body’s complex physiological processes.
When essential oils are taken internally, their components pass through the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream and are then distributed throughout the body. Essential oils are lipid-soluble, which allows their components to reach different parts of the body. Like other substances we consume, the components of essential oils are metabolized by the liver and other organs and are then eliminated from the body.
The composition of essential oils is highly complex. Each component has its own biochemical properties and may interact with cells and organs in different ways. Although not all mechanisms of action are fully understood, the body can only process certain amounts of essential oils.
For this reason, the recommended dosages stated on product labels, as well as other professional guidance, should always be followed carefully to avoid excessive intake and possible toxicity.
Effective ways to use essential oils internally
- Use suitable essential oils when cooking or baking instead of fresh or dried herbs and spices.
- Remember that essential oils are much more concentrated than fresh or dried herbs and spices, so always begin with a very small amount.
- For stronger oils, it is advisable to use the “toothpick method”: dip the tip of a clean toothpick into the oil and stir it into the food instead of using a whole drop.
- Add suitable essential oils to drinking water, smoothies, milk, tea or other beverages.
- Suitable essential oils may also be taken in a vegetable capsule or added to a small amount of yogurt.
*For every method of use, always read and follow the directions on the specific product label. There you will find oil-specific instructions and safety information.
